Metal lanterns would have been a neccesary part of all homes and establishments during the 18th and 19th centuries. Before the invention of electricity, all buildings would have been lit by either candle lanterns or paraffin lamps.
 
This is a basic candel lantern which would have been used in most houses, it has a bracket on the back enabling its user to hang it outside if needed.
