Because households of the day were lit by oil lamps and candles, Victorian candles often made from tallow or whale blubber had wicks that didn't burn away, so the cotton wicks needed to be frequently trimmed in order to keep the flame a reasonable size.
 
This is a Victorian silver plated candle snuffer and wick trimmer with its original stand. The snuffer has an elaborate design and sits on three small turned feet.
 
The condition is very good with a few very minor scuffs to the stand. The spring in the snuffers is tight and work very well.
