Victorian Cut Glass Decanter/Claret Jug

Until the 1670s wine was served at the table in jug or green glass bottle. The decanter started to appear after 1670 and usually took a jug form, it wasn't until the middle of the 1700s that decanters were seen in a form we are more familiar with now.

 

This is a lovely quality, well cut Claret jug. The body has elaborate cut panels with a feceted neck and shoulders. the stopper has a row of dimple cuts echoing the cutting on the edge of the handle.

It wood have been owned by a wealthy family.

 

The condition is very good.

 

Dimensions: 14cm wide with handle x 17cm high x 11cm deep
